The INDI Alliance on Sunday (27 July) accused the Election Commission of India (ECI) of disenfranchising nearly 2 crore voters in Bihar through a flawed and opaque voter verification process, reported The New Indian Express.

At a press conference in Patna, leaders from Congress, RJD, CPI(ML), and CPI(M) demanded an immediate halt to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. They termed the process “institutional arrogance” and alleged that it was based on unreliable, form-based data.

“Our apprehension is turning out to be true. We had warned that this drive would ultimately lead to the exclusion of nearly two crore people,” the opposition stated.

Congress MP Abhishek Manu Singhvi said, “The entire exercise reeks of institutional arrogance. There are too many inconsistencies and no clarity. This is not a correction exercise; this is exclusion in the name of verification.” RJD MP Manoj Jha added, “Opacity has become the hallmark of your functioning.”

The Commission emphasised that discrepancies emerged during the enumeration between 24 June and 25 July. Booth Level Officers couldn’t find some voters or failed to receive their forms. Reasons included migration, death, non-response, or unwillingness to stay registered.

The ECI assured that Electoral Registration Officers and Assistant EROs would finalise voter status by 1 August, and the revision process remains open for scrutiny.
