India And Nepal Sign Landmark Power Transmission Agreements To Strengthen Cross-Border Energy Cooperation

India and Nepal took a significant step forward in regional energy collaboration on Wednesday (29 October), as Nepal’s Minister for Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation, Kulman Ghising, met with India’s Union Minister for Power and Housing & Urban Affairs, Manohar Lal, in New Delhi.

The meeting emphasised the deepening cooperation between the two neighbours in advancing hydropower and cross-border electricity initiatives.

The discussions covered a broad agenda from the progress of hydropower projects in Nepal to the development of regional transmission connectivity that will enable greater cross-border electricity trade.

Both sides reaffirmed their shared vision of ensuring energy security and promoting cleaner, more sustainable power generation across South Asia.

In the presence of the two ministers, Joint Venture and Shareholders’ Agreements were signed between India’s POWERGRID Corporation, a Maharatna Central Public Sector Enterprise, and the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA).

The upcoming projects include the Inaruwa (Nepal)–New Purnea (India) 400 kV Double Circuit (Quad Moose) Transmission Link and the Lamki (Dododhara) (Nepal)–Bareilly (India) 400 kV Double Circuit (Quad Moose) Transmission Link.

Upon completion, these high-capacity corridors will significantly boost power exchange between the two nations, enhance grid stability, and support regional economic growth.

Officials said the meeting reflects the renewed momentum in India–Nepal energy cooperation, anchored in decades of diplomatic goodwill and a shared pursuit of sustainable development.
