India has strongly condemned the "destruction" of the historic residence of Bangladesh founder Sheikh Mujibur Rehman in Dhaka by a violent mob.

In a statement on Thursday (6 February), the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said that the act of vandalism was "regrettable".

The MEA said that Dhanmondi residence of Rahman, fondly known as Bangabandhu, was an important part of Bangladesh's national consciousness and history.

"It is regrettable that the historic residence of Sheikh Mujibur Rehman, a symbol of the heroic resistance of the people of Bangladesh against the forces of occupation and oppression, was destroyed on February 5, 2025," MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said in response to media queries regarding the incident.

"All those who value the freedom struggle that nurtured Bangla identity and pride are aware of the importance of this residence for the national consciousness of Bangladesh," the MEA spokesperson said.

A large group of protesters vandalised and set on fire to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's residence in Dhaka on Wednesday during a live online address by ousted Bangladeshi PM Sheikh Hasina's live address organised by the Awami League's now-disbanded student wing Chhatra League.

Thousands gathered outside the Dhanmondi residence from early evening, responding to a social media call for a "Bulldozer Procession" ahead of Hasina’s scheduled 9 pm (BST) address.

Responding to the incident, Hasina, who is the daughter of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, said that while the structure might be erased, her family's history could never be wiped out.
