In a significant step towards ensuring India's access to critical minerals, Union Minister for Coal and Mines G Kishan Reddy held discussions with Raúl Alejandro Jalil, Governor of Catamarca, Argentina, in New Delhi on Wednesday (19 February).
According to a government press release, the meeting, attended by senior officials from the Ministry of Mines, focused on enhancing cooperation in the mining sector, with a particular emphasis on lithium exploration and investment opportunities.
A key highlight of the engagement was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Mineral Exploration and Consultancy Limited (MECL), a Public Sector Undertaking under the Ministry of Mines, and the Provincial Government of Catamarca, Argentina.
This agreement is expected to deepen bilateral collaboration in exploration and resource development of essential minerals, crucial for India’s growing demand in the electric vehicle (EV) and renewable energy sectors.
Argentina, a key player in the 'Lithium Triangle', is home to some of the world’s largest lithium reserves, making it a vital partner for India’s mineral security.
Discussions covered ongoing lithium exploration efforts by Khanij Bidesh India Ltd. (KABIL) and Greenko in Catamarca, alongside the potential for increased participation of Indian companies in Argentina’s mining projects.
Senior officials from both nations also deliberated on policy frameworks, regulatory mechanisms, and sustainable mining practices.
The discussions underscored a shared commitment to ensuring that lithium extraction and processing align with environmental and ethical standards.
Additionally, the meeting stressed the importance of knowledge exchange and infrastructure support to further strengthen India’s presence in Argentina’s mining sector.
This collaboration is set to accelerate lithium exploration projects, enhance resource security, and open new avenues for Indian companies in Latin America’s mining landscape.
As India continues its transition towards green energy and e-mobility, securing reliable access to lithium and other essential minerals will be crucial.
