Bangladesh's Chief of Army Staff General Waker-Uz-Zaman, who was appointed by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and ensured her safe passage to India on 5 August 2024, has emphasised the significance of balanced and equitable relations with India.

Speaking to Bangladesh's highest-circulated daily, Prothom Alo, General Zaman underlined the need for mutual respect and fairness in the bilateral partnership, describing India as an "important neighbour."

In the interview, General Zaman highlighted the interdependent nature of the two nations' relationship.

"India is an important neighbour. We are dependent on India in many ways, and India benefits from us too. A large number of Indians are working here, both formally and informally. Many Bangladeshis visit India for medical treatment, and we import significant quantities of goods from them," he stated.

General Zaman reassured India's strategic importance to Bangladesh, affirming a commitment to safeguarding mutual interests. "Both nations must equally prioritise and respect each other's interests," he said.

He stressed the role of a robust bilateral relationship in fostering progress, stability, and regional harmony.
