India Records 19.5 Lakh EV Sales In 2024, Accounting For 7.44 Per Cent Of Total Vehicles Sold

India recorded 19.50 lakh electric vehicle (EV) sales in 2024, accounting for 7.44 per cent of total vehicle sales, according to data from the Ministry of Heavy Industries.

The government expects this upward trend in EV adoption to continue in the coming years.

In a written reply to a question in the Lok Sabha, Minister of Heavy Industries Bhupathiraju Srinivasa Varma informed that out of the 2,62,07,453 vehicles registered on the e-Vahan portal of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways in the calendar year 2024, 19,50,490 were electric vehicles.

Since 2014-15, EV registrations have increased significantly, with the percentage share rising from 0.01 per cent in financial year 2014-15 to 7.31 per cent in financial year 2024-25, as per the e-Vahan portal.

"Increasing trend in EV penetration is expected to be continue," the minister said.


"Under the FAME-II scheme, an allocation of Rs.839 crore was made for setting up of electric vehicle public charging stations (EVPCS). Similarly, under PM E-DRIVE scheme, an allocation of Rs. 2,000 crore has been made for setting up electric vehicle public charging infrastructure," he said.

The Ministry of Power (MoP) had issued "Guidelines for Installation and Operation of Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure-2024" on 17 September 2024 that outline standards and protocols for setting up of EV charging infrastructure network in the country, he said.

Further, MoP has also issued “Guidelines for Installation and Operation of Battery Swapping and Charging Stations” on 10 January 2025, with an aim to facilitate robust EV charging infrastructure in the country.
