India has officially shown interest in hosting the 2030 Commonwealth Games, selecting Ahmedabad as the proposed venue.
Indian Olympic Association (IOA) president PT Usha has shared a letter with Commonwealth Games Federation president Chris Jenkins regarding this initiative, India Today reported.
This initiative is seen as a strategic move to position India for a potential bid to host the 2036 Olympic Games.
The deadline for submitting the official bid is 31 March. Ahead of this, confirmed the receipt of Usha's letter, according to the India Today report.
India has also proposed to host events that have been removed from the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
As a result, sports like shooting, hockey, wrestling, badminton, archery, and squash could feature in the event.
Additionally, there is a possibility of cricket making a return, given that it was last included in Birmingham 2022.
India previously hosted the event in 2010 in New Delhi.
During their visit, they also held discussions regarding the National Games, which were recently conducted in Uttarakhand.
During discussions, Usha highlighted Ahmedabad's role in organizing big sporting events, such as the ODI World Cup 2023 final, which saw nearly a lakh and the Coldplay concert recently, as per media reports.
Meanwhile, the Commonwealth Games Federation has struggled to secure host cities, as many withdrew due to rising costs and financial concerns.
Singapore and Malaysia had initially expressed interest but later opted out, citing funding constraints.
