India's Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) is actively developing a modified Agni-5 intercontinental ballistic missile designed to carry a formidable conventional warhead, reported India Today.

This new variant, unlike the original Agni-5 that deploys nuclear warheads with a range exceeding 5000 kilometers, will function as a conventional weapon, capable of delivering a 7500-kilogram bunker-buster warhead.

India is accelerating its efforts to develop advanced bunker-buster capabilities, learning from recent global conflicts to prepare for future warfare by creating a powerful new missile system that can penetrate fortified underground targets, stated the report.

The missile aims to strike hardened enemy facilities buried under layers of reinforced concrete, with expectations of it penetrating 80 to 100 meters underground before detonation. This development signals India's intent to match US capabilities, but India's indigenous version will be missile-delivered, offering a more flexible and cost-effective platform than the US approach of relying on large bomber aircraft.
