In a major stride towards building a secure and responsible artificial intelligence ecosystem, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) announced the selection of five innovative projects under the Safe & Trusted AI pillar of the IndiaAI Mission.
These initiatives aim to tackle key challenges such as deepfake detection, gender bias in AI systems, and generative AI security.
The projects were chosen from over 400 proposals received in the second round of the Expression of Interest (EoI) launched in December 2024.
A multi-stakeholder committee comprising technical experts evaluated submissions from top academic institutions, startups, and research organizations before shortlisting the final five.
Saakshya – Being developed by IIT Jodhpur and IIT Madras, this multi-agent, RAG-enhanced framework focuses on deepfake detection and governance.
AI Vishleshak – A joint initiative by IIT Mandi and the Directorate of Forensic Services, Himachal Pradesh, this project aims to enhance detection of audio-visual deepfakes and handwritten signature forgeries with adversarial robustness, explainability and domain generalisation.
Real-Time Voice Deepfake Detection System – Led by IIT Kharagpur, this solution aims to counter emerging threats from synthetic voice manipulation.
Evaluating Gender Bias in Agricultural LLMs – A collaboration between Digital Futures Lab and Karya, this project focuses on creating Digital Public Goods (DPG) for benchmarking and fair data work.
IndiaAI, an independent business division under MeitY, serves as the implementation agency for the IndiaAI Mission.
It seeks to democratise access to AI, foster technological self-reliance, and promote ethical and transparent AI practices across all sectors of society.
According to the Ministry, these initiatives demonstrate IndiaAI’s commitment to translate the vision of “Safe & Trusted AI” into concrete solutions.
The projects are expected to advance real-time deepfake detection, strengthen forensic analysis, address bias in AI models, and build robust evaluation tools for generative AI, ensuring that AI systems deployed in India are reliable, secure, and inclusive.
According to the ministry, by uniting academia, industry, and civil society, the IndiaAI Mission aims to ensure AI systems are reliable, inclusive, and ethically aligned with public interest.
