The Directorate General of Civil Aviation's (DGCA) report on airline-wise International Traffic Statistics for the April-June 2024 quarter highlights a notable strengthening of Indian airlines’ position in international travel.

Indian carriers’ cumulative market share grew to 45.6 per cent this quarter, up from 43.9 per cent a year prior according to a report by The Indian Express.

International passenger traffic to and from India reached 1.77 crore flyers in April-June 2024, marking a 13.3 per cent year-over-year increase and a 13.5 per cent rise from the corresponding pre-pandemic period in 2019.

This steady growth indicates a strong post-pandemic recovery for the sector, with Indian airlines gradually increasing their foothold in the international segment.

Indian airlines' international market share has significantly expanded since the June 2019 quarter, where it was just 34.7 per cent before the pandemic. Unlike many foreign carriers whose share has been declining, Indian carriers have not only maintained but expanded their market share as international travel demand continues to grow.

Vistara saw its share grow from 3.1 per cent a year ago to 4.2 per cent. Meanwhile, Air India recorded a slight dip in share to 12.3 per cent, down from 12.5 per cent last year. SpiceJet, facing financial challenges, saw its share drop to 2.4 per cent from 2.7 per cent in the previous year and 4 per cent in 2019.

Among international airlines, Emirates remains the largest foreign carrier by market share for flights to and from India, although its share fell to 7.9 per cent from 8.6 per cent last year and 9.7 per cent in Q2 of 2019.

Abu Dhabi’s Etihad, however, grew its share to 3.9 per cent, up from 2.6 per cent a year prior, though still below its 2019 level of 4.6 per cent.

As the overall market for international passengers in India continues to expand, Indian airlines are capitalizing on this growth to secure a larger share of the market, signaling positive momentum for India’s aviation sector amidst recovering global travel demand.
