The Indian Army contingent, comprising 334 personnel, departed for Nepal today (28 December) to participate in the eighteenth edition of the Battalion-Level Joint Military Exercise Surya Kiran.
This annual event, held alternately in India and Nepal, is scheduled to take place in Saljhandi, Nepal, from 31 December 2024 to 13 January 2025.
This year, the Indian side will be represented by a battalion from the 11th Gorkha Rifles, while the Nepal Army will participate with the Srijung Battalion.
The exercise aims to enhance operational synergy between the two forces through intensive training in areas such as jungle warfare, counter-terrorism operations in mountainous terrain, and Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) as outlined in the United Nations Charter.
These activities will allow the troops to sharpen their combat skills, refine their ability to operate in challenging situations, and foster mutual understanding.
The current edition follows recent high-level interactions between the two countries' military leadership.
General Upendra Dwivedi, India’s Chief of the Army Staff, visited Nepal earlier this year, while General Ashok Raj Sigdel, Chief of the Nepal Army, visited India earlier this month.
