Indian Army Sets Up New Elite Unit To Research Future Communication Technologies: Here's All You Need To Know

In a significant development, the Indian Army has introduced the Signals Technology Evaluation and Adaptation Group (STEAG), dedicated to exploring futuristic communication technologies for military applications.
Headed by a Colonel-rank officer, STEAG will be the used for nurturing and developing tailored technologies spanning the complete spectrum of wired and wireless systems to include electronic exchanges, mobile communications, software defined radios, electronic warfare systems.
It will also include 5G and 6G networks, quantum technologies, AI and machine learning.
“It will be the first of its kind unit to be equipped with the capability to harness niche technology, leverage cutting-edge solutions and identify suitable use cases for defence applications by fostering collaboration and partnership with the academia and industry,” an officer concerned with the matter said.
Speaking on the matter, Army Chief Gen Manoj Pande emphasized the importance of staying ahead in technology, particularly in modern warfare where effective communication is paramount for operational success.
"In the fast-evolving technologies for the battlefield, the side with better communication technologies and the ability to connect the various constituents for information sharing will have an edge over its adversary," another official said.
Officials also believe that STEAG will play a crucial role in fostering self-reliance in high-end communication technologies, which have traditionally been dominated by countries with advanced economies and research ecosystems.
