Indian Army To Induct 307 Indigenous ATAGS Guns In Rs 6,900 Crore Push To Replace Vintage Artillery Over 5 Years

The Defence Ministry announced on Wednesday (9 July) that indigenously developed Advanced Towed Artillery Gun Systems (ATAGS) will replace older, smaller calibre guns across the Army’s regiments, PTI reported.
The ATAGS, designed by Pune’s Armament Research and Development Establishment (ARDE), a laboratory under the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), has been hailed as an “exemplary mission mode success.”
Highlighting the rapid development journey, ARDE Director A Raju stated in a video shared by the Defence Ministry on social media, “We started this project in the year 2012. And, within a span of 10 years, we could complete the total process of design to manufacturing, testing and induction.”
He emphasised the system’s sophisticated technology and ARDE’s vital role in promoting “Atmanirbharta of our nation.”
With a formidable maximum range of 48 km, the ATAGS boasts advanced features, including an all-electric drive system for gun laying and ammunition handling, designed to ensure maintenance-free operation even in challenging mountainous and desert terrains.
“ATAGS, @DRDO_India's flagship artillery system, is spearheading the #IndianArmy's artillery modernisation,” the ministry said on X, describing the weapon as a collaborative triumph uniting the Indian Army, DRDO, and both public and private industry.
The Indian Army is set to receive 307 units of the new guns over the next five years, marking a decisive step in replacing vintage artillery and boosting operational readiness.
