Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Tuesday (7 January) said that the government is on alert regarding China’s announcement to construct the world’s largest dam on the Brahmaputra River in Tibet, near the Indian border.

His statement comes days after Beijing disclosed its ambitious project, raising concerns about its potential implications for downstream states like Arunachal Pradesh and Assam.

“The Indian government is on alert,” Singh asserted during an event, emphasising India’s commitment to monitoring developments and taking necessary measures to safeguard its interests.

New Delhi has also urged Beijing to ensure that the interests of downstream regions are not adversely affected by its upstream activities.

Singh’s remarks were made during his visit to Agra for the 57th State-level meet of the Uttar Pradesh Madhyamik Shikshak Sangh, held at Mufeed-e-Aam Inter College.

"Earlier, people did not take it seriously when India spoke at international forums, but now when India speaks, the world listens," Singh said, underlining the country’s emerging global influence.

Highlighting the nation’s economic rise, he noted, “Earlier, the economy was at the 11th position globally. Now, the Indian economy is at the fifth place and it will be among the top three nations in the coming two and a half years.”

Singh also emphasized India’s strides in defence and technology, citing advancements in self-reliance and innovation in these sectors.

Singh added that India is becoming self-reliant in the field of defence and using new technologies and innovations, reflecting the government’s commitment to bolstering national security and reducing dependence on foreign imports.
