Indian Railways' Freight Revenue Increases To Rs 1.68 Lakh Crore, Passenger Revenue Grows To Rs 70,693 Crore In Four Years

Indian Railways has reported a surge in revenue generation from both freight and passenger services over the last four years.
While the freight revenue increased by around 48.29 per cent to over Rs 54,800 crore, the passenger revenue grew by nearly 40 per cent to more than Rs 20,024 crore since FY20, according to the information provided by Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw in a written reply to a question in the Rajya Sabha.
The freight revenue of Indian Railways increased from Rs 1.13 lakh crore in 2019-20 to Rs 1.68 lakh crore in 2023-24, an increase of Rs 54,805 crore.
Meanwhile, passenger revenue grew from Rs 50,669 crore in 2019-20 to Rs 70,693 crore in 2023-24, a rise of Rs 20,024 crore.
The minister said that as of 1 April 2024, the Railways was using 79,000 coaches, including 56,000 general and non-AC sleeper coaches and 23,000 AC coaches, for running train services.
According to the minister, non-AC coaches, including general and sleeper classes, account for 82 per cent of the seats (around 51 lakh) and contribute 53 per cent of the revenue. AC coaches make up 18 per cent of the seats (around 14 lakh) and generate 47 per cent of the revenue.
