Indian Railways Launches Pilot Scheme To Provide Covered Blankets In AC Coaches To Enhance Hygiene

Indian Railways has launched a pilot initiative to provide covered blankets for passengers travelling in AC coaches, aiming to enhance hygiene and offer a safer, cleaner, and more comfortable journey, the Indian Express reported.
The move addresses a long-standing demand from passengers, as blankets in trains are typically cleaned only once or twice a month, unlike bed sheets and pillow covers.
To tackle this hygiene concern, each blanket will now come with a cover.
Currently, the covered blankets have been introduced on one train on a trial basis, with plans to extend the initiative to other trains in the near future.
On Thursday (16 October), the Railway Minister inaugurated the new practice of printed blanket covers in all AC classes of the Jaipur–Asarva Express.
In the Union Budget 2025-26, Rs 9,960 crore has been allocated for railway infrastructure in the state.
Under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, 85 stations are being redeveloped, eight of which have already been inaugurated this year. Rajasthan currently operates 12 Vande Bharat services, ensuring faster, safer, and more comfortable travel across key routes.
Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw emphasised the ongoing improvements, stating, “Railway development is progressing on multiple fronts—introduction of new types of trains, construction of new stations, laying of new tracks, completion of electrification, and creation of modern maintenance depots. However, the main focus remains bringing a meaningful transformation in the lives of passengers.”
