India's first hydrogen-powered train, boasting the world's most powerful hydrogen engine, is expected to be launched in May this year.

Speaking at the Republic Plenary Summit, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw highlighted the significance of this development, stating, "Our first hydrogen train should be launched in May this year. This is the most powerful hydrogen train in the entire world, 1,200 hp, whereas most of the other trains being developed in the world are like 600 or 800 hp. So this is going to be really a big thing."

Emphasising India's technological capabilities, Vaishnaw said, "That demonstrates how deeply we care about technology and how much talent we have that we can develop such complex technologies in our country."

"We'll also see totally new generation of locomotives. I recently visited Dahod, Gujarat, where a 9,000 horse power locomotive is being developed and it is like a data centre. It doesn't look like a railway engine, at all. When you move inside, you feel as if you are walking through a computer centre or a data centre. It's so advanced and very soon we'll start exporting such engines to the world," he said.

The minister expressed confidence in India's potential to emerge as a leading manufacturer and exporter of railway equipment, drawing parallels with the country's success in sectors such as electronics, telecom, and defense.
