Sarbananda Sonowal inaugurating cruise terminal in Mumbai
Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal flagged off cruise operations from the newly inaugurated Mumbai International Cruise Terminal (MICT), marking a major milestone under the Cruise Bharat Mission.
Developed at Ballard Pier with an investment of Rs 556 crore, MICT is now India’s largest cruise terminal, capable of handling one million passengers annually and accommodating five cruise ships simultaneously, the press release stated.
“Today, Mumbai, with its longstanding repute as a major maritime hub in the world, commenced Cruise Operations from the Mumbai International Cruise Terminal, providing passengers modern amenities for a better and safer experience,” said Sonowal.
The facility spans 4.15 lakh sq ft, with 72 immigration counters and commercial floors designed to global standards. It features a maritime-inspired wavy ceiling, rose gold accents, and wave-shaped seating, reflecting Mumbai’s coastal heritage.
Sonowal also inaugurated the Fire Memorial at Victoria Docks, restored under the “Golden Tears” theme to honour the sacrifice of Mumbai Port fire personnel.
He launched façade lighting at Fort House and Evelyn House, two heritage buildings now glowing with restored grandeur.
The Green Port Initiative received a boost with the inauguration of Shore to Ship Electric Supply at Mumbai Port, aimed at reducing emissions and enhancing operational efficiency.
Sonowal also outlined the Cruise Bharat Mission’s ambition to develop 10 sea cruise terminals, 100 river cruise terminals, and generate over 4 lakh jobs by 2029.
At a parallel MoU signing event, investments worth Rs 5,700 crore were pledged for infrastructure development at Vadhavan Port.
“This port is going to act as a game changer for not only India’s maritime sector, but also enable regional trade,” said Sonowal, emphasising its potential to place India among the top ten global ports by 2047.
