India’s Mega Port Connectivity Push: 11 Road Projects Worth Rs 4,085 Crore Done, 22 Projects Worth Rs 23,658 Crore Under Implementation

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has informed Parliament that a total of 33 port-road connectivity projects have been taken up under the Government’s flagship Sagarmala programme — aimed at enhancing India’s maritime infrastructure and boosting trade efficiency.
Of these, 11 projects have been completed at a combined length of 216.16 km, involving an expenditure of Rs 4,085.43 crore.
The information was given by Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari in a written reply to a question in the Lok Sabha.
The works include major road upgrades and new linkages to ports such as Kakinada, Visakhapatnam, Mormugao, Alang, Jawaharlal Nehru Port, Redi, and V O Chidambaranar, improving last-mile connectivity and reducing logistical bottlenecks.
The remaining 22 projects are under implementation, covering 1,266.32 km at a total estimated cost of Rs 23,658.03 crore.
The minister noted that several projects have faced delays due to land acquisition issues, utility shifting, environmental clearances, contractual disputes, and weather-related disruptions such as cyclones and heavy rainfall.
Gadkari confirmed that no sanctioned project has been dropped or shelved.
While several projects have experienced time and cost overruns, the ministry is implementing corrective measures, including scope adjustments to meet technical requirements from port authorities and railways, and addressing local demands.
The Sagarmala programme, led by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping & Waterways, seeks to leverage India’s 7,500 km coastline for port-led development, reduce logistics costs, and boost export competitiveness through enhanced multimodal connectivity.
