As many as 26,367 public EV charging stations have been installed across the country, the government has informed the Lok Sabha.
This expansion is part of the government’s broader efforts to enhance electric mobility and reduce reliance on fossil fuels.
"26,367 Public EV Charging Stations has been deployed across the Country," Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari said in a written reply to a question in the Lok Sabha.
Among states, Karnataka leads with 5,879 charging stations, followed by Maharashtra (3,842), Uttar Pradesh (2,113), Delhi (1,951), Tamil Nadu (1,495), Kerala (1,288), Rajasthan (1,285), Gujarat (1,008), Telangana (976), Madhya Pradesh (942), Haryana (808), and West Bengal (791).
Other states include Andhra Pradesh (614), Punjab (607), Odisha (550), Chhattisgarh (290), Jharkhand (277), Bihar (393), Himachal Pradesh (114), Uttarakhand (202), and Goa (155).
In the northeast, Assam has 311 charging stations, Tripura has 54, Manipur has 50, Arunachal Pradesh has 44, Meghalaya has 43, Nagaland has 36, Mizoram has 13, and Sikkim has 11.
Among Union Territories, Jammu & Kashmir has 157 charging stations, Puducherry has 42, Chandigarh has 14, Dadra & Nagar Haveli and Daman & Diu have 6, Andaman & Nicobar has 4 while Ladakh and Lakshadweep each have one.
As of 1 January 2025, 4,523 of these have been installed, though only 251 are currently fully operational, the minister said.
Additionally, Rs 73.5 crore was sanctioned in March 2024 for the installation of 980 more public charging stations, while another 400 stations have also been approved across various states.
To support highway infrastructure, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), through National Highways Logistics Management Limited (NHLML), is integrating EV charging stations at wayside amenities (WSAs) along major highways.
So far, 50 WSAs with EV charging facilities are operational, according to the minister.
The government aims to develop 700 such WSA locations, of which 458 have been awarded and 90 are already functional.
