Madhya Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation Ltd
Hindustan Construction Company Ltd (HCC), in partnership with Tata Projects Ltd, has secured a Rs 2,191 crore contract from the Madhya Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (MPMRCL) for the Indore Metro Phase 1 project, as reported The Hindustan Times.
The contract involves the construction of an 8.65-km-long underground corridor, including tunnels and stations, making it the first and only underground segment of the 31.32-km Indore Metro Phase 1 project.
HCC holds a 55 per cent share in the joint venture.
The project, known as Package IN-05R, will include - 11.32 km of tunnel construction using tunnel boring machines (TBM) and seven underground stations at key locations:
Indore Railway Station
Rajwada
Chota Ganpati
Bada Ganpati
Ramchandra Nagar
Airport
Further, the underground stretch will connect a ramp east of Indore Railway Station to a ramp west of Airport Station.
Meanwhile, Indore expects to launch first phase of operations with a 5.90 km priority corridor, connecting Gandhi Nagar station to station number three on the Super Corridor.
This stretch witnessed its first trial run in September last year.
Despite the excitement surrounding the launch, officials expect that passenger demand might initially be low due to the dispersed population along the route.
However, they remain optimistic about the metro's scalability.
“Once the metro rail starts and its route stretches, there won’t be a shortage of passengers,” the MPMRCL official added.
HCC is actively involved in major metro infrastructure projects across India. Currently, the company is constructing 4 km of twin tunnels and four stations for Mumbai Metro Line III and handling two metro packages in Chennai.
