Indore Metro's Key Stretch Likely To Go Underground After Cabinet Nod

The Madhya Pradesh government has approved a proposal to alter the Indore Metro route through the city’s densely populated residential and commercial zones, with the revised alignment now set to run underground, reported PTI.

The decision was announced by State Urban Development and Housing Minister Kailash Vijayvargiya.

Work on the Indore Metro began in 2019, but the project has repeatedly encountered opposition from residents and business owners who argued that the elevated alignment would disrupt daily life and damage livelihoods.

“We have unanimously decided that the metro rail will now run underground from Khajrana Square via Palasia Square to the Bada Ganpati area. If necessary, the proposal to change the metro rail line plan will be placed in the Cabinet meeting with the approval of Chief Minister Mohan Yadav,” Vijayvargiya told reporters after a review meeting.

He acknowledged that the modification would raise project costs but assured that additional funds will be arranged from other sources.

Officials said that commercial operations have already begun on the six-kilometre priority corridor between Gandhi Nagar Station and Super Corridor Station No. 3.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had inaugurated this phase on 31 May, coinciding with the 300th birth anniversary of Devi Ahilya Bai.

The Indore Metro, spanning 31.32 km with 28 proposed stations, carries a total estimated cost of Rs 7,500.80 crore.
