The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) formally approved an Arab League-backed alternative to US President Donald Trump’s controversial proposal for Gaza, urging global support for the initiative, reported The Economic Times.

The decision came during an emergency meeting in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, held three days after the Arab League ratified the plan at a summit in Cairo.

Crafted by Egypt, the counter-proposal rejects Trump’s plan to take over Gaza and displace its residents. Instead, it envisions a rebuilding process led by the Palestinian Authority, aiming for long-term recovery and reconstruction of the region.

A communiqué from the OIC confirmed the adoption of the plan, urging international and regional funding institutions to provide immediate support.

Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty welcomed the endorsement, emphasising the need to mobilise global backing, including from the European Union, Japan, Russia, and China.

Arab nations have united in opposition, seeing the plan as a forced displacement of Palestinians.

The Egyptian alternative, however, has already been rejected by both the US and Israel, with Washington stating that it "does not meet expectations."

Despite this, Trump’s Middle East envoy, Steve Witkoff, described it as a “good-faith first step” from Egypt.
