Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha reached Kalmykia, Russia, on Friday (17 October) to lead a delegation bringing back the Holy Relics of Lord Buddha after their week-long exposition in Elista, the capital of the Republic of Kalmykia.

Calling the event a “historic homecoming of faith,” Sinha paid homage to the relics at the Geden Sheddup Choikorling Monastery, also known as the “Golden Abode of Shakyamuni Buddha,” reported The New Indian Express.

Sinha lit a ceremonial lamp, offered prayers, and presented a “Khatak” in front of Bakula Rinpoche.

He described the exposition as a bridge of spiritual friendship that reinforces the cultural and spiritual connection between India and Russia.

Sinha stated that the exposition will improve the relationship between Indian and Russian peoples, and that this monument would serve as a great bridge of spiritual friendship.

Before his visit, Sinha shared on X, “Leaving for Kalmykia, Russia, where I will lead the delegation to bring back holy relics of Lord Buddha after a week-long exposition. I sincerely thank Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi for this sacred opportunity. ‘Om Mamo Buddhaya.’”

The relics were taken to Elista by a delegation led by Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya and senior Indian monks.

The ministry noted that this first-ever exposition in Kalmykia highlights the deep civilizational ties between India and Russia and honors the legacy of the 19th Kushok Bakula Rinpoche, who revived Buddhism in Mongolia and Russian regions like Kalmykia, Buryatia, and Tuva.

The event was jointly organised by the International Buddhist Confederation (IBC), the National Museum, and the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA).
