Kamal Haasan Approaches Karnataka High Court To Allow 'Thug Life' Film Release After Calls For Ban

In the latest development in the ongoing language row, actor-politician Kamal Haasan on Monday (2 June) approached the Karnataka High Court, seeking legal protection for the release of his upcoming film Thug Life, after pro-Kannada groups and the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC) warned of a statewide boycott unless he apologised for his controversial remarks.

As per a report by NDTV, “If he doesn’t apologise, Thug Life won’t run in Karnataka. This is not about the industry, this is about the state,” said KFCC president M Narasimhalu, asserting that exhibitors and distributors were unwilling to screen the film amidst the backlash.

The controversy began when Haasan, while speaking at a promotional event for Thug Life in Chennai, remarked, “Kannada was born out of Tamil.” The comment drew swift condemnation across political lines, with Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah stating that Kannada has a long and independent history, and BJP state chief BY Vijayendra accusing Haasan of “linguistic arrogance”.

Haasan, however, has stood firm. “If I’m wrong, I’ll apologise. If I’m not, I won’t. This is my lifestyle — please don’t tamper with it,” he said in an interview with India Today, reiterating his faith in democracy and the rule of law.

The matter now rests with the High Court, even as the fate of Thug Life's release in the state remains uncertain.
