US Vice President Kamala Harris is set to contest the presidential election against former US President Donald Trump after being nominated by incumbent President Joe Biden.

On Monday (22 July) night, she claimed to have secured the broad support needed to become the Democratic party's nominee. However, she looks forward to becoming the nominee formally.

"As a daughter of California, I am proud that my home state's delegation helped put our campaign over the top," Harris said in her statement.

Reportedly, she has received the backing of at least 2,579 delegates so far, more than the 1,976 delegates needed to win on a first ballot.

Attacking Trump, Harris said that he wanted to take the country back to a time before many people had full freedoms and equal rights.

"I believe in a future that strengthens our democracy, protects reproductive freedom and ensures every person has the opportunity not just to get by but to get ahead," she added.

"Over the next few months, I will be traveling across the country talking to Americans about everything that is on the line. I fully intend to unite our party, unite our nation, and defeat Donald Trump in November," she concluded.

Biden withdrew from the race after a poor debate performance against Trump and persistent criticism from the Republican Party about his "inability” to complete another term."
