The Kanpur Metro project has reached another significant milestone, with construction work on the Agriculture University–Barra-8 elevated section under Corridor-2 progressing at an active pace.
The erection of I-Girders, vital components in elevated metro structures, has now begun along this 4.5 km stretch, marking a key advancement in the city’s expanding metro network, Times of India reported.
The first I-Girder was successfully installed near Vijay Nagar Chauraha metro station.
These girders, shaped like the English letter “I”, are specially engineered to support crossovers and track-change points, ensuring smooth train movement along elevated routes.
Approximately 164 I-Girders are planned for installation along the section, all of which are being cast at the Naubasta casting yard.
This marked the completion of all 29 trains designated for Corridor-1, each manufactured at the Savli plant in Gujarat.
The next phase will see the arrival of 10 new trains for Corridor-2 (CSA–Barra-8), further expanding the network’s capacity.
Sushil Kumar, Managing Director of the Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC), was quoted as saying, “In total, 29 trains will serve Corridor-1, while both corridors combined will have 39 trains, each comprising three coaches. Once the corridor is extended up to Naubasta, the increased fleet will ensure a higher frequency of trains, making metro travel more seamless and convenient.”
