To boost regional air connectivity and ease access to remote towns, the Kerala government has reportedly expedited plans to establish airstrips in Idukki, Wayanad, and Kasaragod.

The initiative aims to provide vital links for passengers and emergency operations in regions currently underserved by major transport networks, The New Indian Express reported.

District collectors in the three areas have been instructed to identify suitable land urgently. Sites under consideration include Periya in Kasaragod and Kalpetta in Wayanad, while a new location is being scouted in Idukki.

“The three district collectors have been directed to finalise suitable land at the earliest,” a senior official with the Chief Minister’s Office was quoted as saying by TNIE.

Although Idukki already hosts a small NCC-run airstrip at Sathram near Vandiperiyar for training cadets, the state plans a separate facility aimed at civil aviation needs.

“The main aim of the airstrips is to facilitate air passenger services. However, they can also be used during emergencies like landslides,” the official explained.

The state government had earlier entrusted joint venture of RITES and KIIFCON has been tasked with conducting the feasibility study.

A budget of Rs 1.5 crore was earmarked in the 2025–26 state budget for the detailed project report and associated groundwork.

Earlier, Rs 20 crore was set aside for heliport and airstrip development.

The project coincides with the imminent launch of two regional airlines, Air Kerala and Al Hind, both of which have secured operational permits and are awaiting final clearances to begin flying under the UDAN scheme.
