The intense student union elections at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) concluded late on Sunday (27 April), with the Left alliance of the All India Students' Association and Democratic Students' Front (AISA-DSF) securing three out of the four central panel positions. The remaining post was won by the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP).
The election results were announced with Nitish Kumar of AISA being declared as the President, while Manisha of DSF took the Vice-President's seat. Munteha, also from DSF, secured the position of General Secretary, and Vaibhav Meena from ABVP won the election for the post of Joint Secretary, Indian Express reported.
After a decade-long absence, the ABVP has regained a position in the central panel of JNUSU, a position that has been held by a Left union continuously since 2016. This development follows the United Left — AISA and the Students’ Federation of India — deciding to part ways in the current year's election.
Meanwhile, the ABVP has announced a "historic" accomplishment in the councillor elections, claiming victory in 23 out of 42 councillor seats throughout the 16 schools and special centres of JNU.
The organisation, in a statement released on Sunday, declared that it had made a breakthrough into the traditionally Left-dominated strongholds of the School of Social Sciences and the School of International Studies, securing two out of five seats in each.
