Madhya Pradesh CM Mohan Yadav
Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav announced on Thursday (24 January) that a complete ban on liquor of all types will be enforced in 17 religious cities and towns across the state.
“Liquor of all kinds will be banned totally in 17 religious cities and towns of Madhya Pradesh,” the Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister said while addressing the inaugural ceremony of an All India Pro Kabaddi Tournament in Narsinghpur district on Thursday.
“Even our players (sportspersons) know that addiction, particularly alcohol consumption, destroys families. So, we’re going to make an important decision on Friday. All kinds of liquor, be it desi or videshi, will be banned totally in the 17 religious cities and towns of our state. This is in line with the commitments on the basis of which we’re running our government,” Yadav said.
“All liquor vends will be closed in the 17 religious cities and towns of MP,” he added.
The announcement made by Yadav is likely to be approved by the state cabinet’s special meeting being held today (24 January) at the historical Maheshwar town in Khargone district.
During Friday’s state cabinet meeting, a blueprint for a revised excise policy is also expected to be finalised.
The Chief Minister’s announcement follows his earlier statement in Bhopal, made ten days ago, hinting at the possibility of a liquor ban in religious towns and cities of Madhya Pradesh.
The 17 cities and towns categorised as holy (religious) by successive governments in MP between 2004 and 2013 include the CM’s home city Ujjain, Amarkantak, Maheshwar, Orchha, Omkareshwar, Mandla, Multai, Mandla (Narmadaghat), Jabalpur, Chitrakoot, Maihar, Salkanpur, Mandaleshwar, Mandsaur, Barman, and Panna.
