Maharashtra Charts Rs 1.3 Lakh Crore Mobility Blueprint To Ease Pune And Pimpri Chinchwad Congestion

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has directed all concerned departments to work in unison to finalise a Comprehensive Mobility Plan (CMP) for Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad, aimed at tackling long-term traffic congestion with a vision extending 30 years into the future.
Speaking at a review meeting organised by Maha Metro at the Yashwantrao Chavan Development Administration Prabodhini, Fadnavis said the Rs 1.3 lakh crore plan would see Rs 62,000 crore invested in its first phase.
Public transport usage should be increased to 30 per cent in the first phase and then to 50 per cent.
Services must be accessible within 500 metres for every citizen, he stated, stressing that departmental responsibilities must be clearly defined and the average metropolitan speed raised to 30 kmph.
The CMP proposes integrated planning for grade separators, ring roads, and tunnel corridors, alongside expanded metro, PMPL bus services, BRTS corridors, bypass routes for Purandar Airport, and multi-modal hubs.
He also called for proactive water supply planning to meet urbanisation demands.
Maha Metro MD Shravan Hardikar noted that the revised 2024 CMP covers 2,550 sq km, factoring in population growth, road safety, and urban expansion and aims to integrate cycling networks, truck terminals, logistics hubs, and tourism infrastructure.
Police commissioners outlined enforcement measures, while municipal commissioners presented localised traffic management strategies in the meeting.
