Devendra Fadnavis prays to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj
In a historic tribute to the legendary Maratha warrior, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis inaugurated the state’s first-ever temple dedicated to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in Bhiwandi, Thane, on the occasion of the Maratha king’s birth anniversary, reported The Indian Express.
The temple stands as a symbol of Shivaji Maharaj’s heroism, valour, and enduring legacy, offering devotees a place to honour his contributions to India’s history.
Speaking at the event, CM Fadnavis announced that the temple would soon receive the status of a pilgrimage site, emphasising its cultural and spiritual significance.
“Why is there a temple for Shivaji Maharaj? It is because he won the battles for God, country, and religion. He made us who we are today — Hindus. Just as one must seek the blessings of Lord Hanuman to complete the experience of worshipping Lord Ram, one must first pay homage to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj before seeking the blessings of any other deity,” Fadnavis was quoted as saying by The Indian Express.
Designed by architect Vijaykumar Patil, the structure echoes the military precision and strength of Shivaji Maharaj’s fortifications.
A striking feature of the temple is its 42-foot-tall entrance, leading into a sabha mandap (assembly hall) of the same height, designed to reflect the majesty of Maratha-era military structures.
At the heart of the temple stands a 6.5-foot statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, sculpted by renowned artist Arun Yogiraj, who also crafted the idol of Lord Ram for the Ayodhya Ram Temple.
Surrounding the temple, 36 intricately designed sections feature large sculptures depicting key moments from Shivaji Maharaj’s life, narrating his journey from a warrior to a visionary leader.
