Phase 1 of the Kasarvadavli Flyover in Thane was opened to traffic on Tuesday (8 July), a move aimed at reducing congestion along the busy Ghodbunder Road, Indian Express reported.
According to the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), the new flyover will enhance connectivity between Thane, Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, Bhiwandi, Vasai, and Virar.
Designed to accommodate up to 73,333 passenger cars, the flyover includes a two-lane, 7.5-metre-wide overpass and a 2×2 lane underpass. The ramp spans a length of 721 metres.
MMRDA officials said the flyover is expected to ease the movement of office traffic and heavy trailers, many of which use the Mumbai-Gujarat corridor via JNPT or Vashi.
The design of the flyover has been planned in alignment with the upcoming Metro Line 4 (Wadala to Gaimukh) to ensure seamless intermodal connectivity once the metro becomes operational.
“This project will make travel between Thane, Borivali, Vasai, JNPT, and Gujarat smoother, and will significantly help reduce traffic congestion on the Gaimukh to Waghbil route,” Sarnaik was quoted by the Indian Express as saying.
Officials said that the completion of this phase will also cut down travel time between Waghbil and Gaimukh.
Construction of the next phase is in progress and will align with the timeline of the Metro Line 4 project.
