Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched a fierce attack on the Trinamool Congress (TMC) during a rally in Alipurduar on Thursday (29 May), calling the Mamata Banerjee-led government "nirmam" (cruel) and accusing it of corruption and indifference, NDTV reported.

Modi pointed to the communal violence in Murshidabad and Malda during protests against the Waqf Act as evidence of the state government's "indifference" to public suffering.

He listed five major crises facing Bengal: ‘violence and anarchy’, crimes against 'our mothers and sisters,' youth unemployment, collapsing ‘trust in the system’, and ‘selfish politics of the ruling party’ stealing the poor's rights.

On the Waqf Act protests, he said, as quoted by NDTV, "Whatever happened in Murshidabad and Malda was an example of the state government's ruthlessness... In the name of appeasement, hooliganism was given a free hand. Imagine the horrific situation when the people of a party running the government identify and burn people's houses, and the police remain mere spectators. I ask the poor people of Bengal, is this how a government runs? Here, the courts have to intervene in every issue. Otherwise, nothing gets resolved.”

Challenging Modi and BJP directly, Banerjee dared conducting elections in Bengal immediately. "I challenge them... If they have the courage, go for elections tomorrow. We are ready and Bengal is ready... The people of Bengal are with us. Please remember, timing is a factor," she said.
