Mamata Banerjee Warns Against Bihar-Like Electoral Roll Exercise In West Bengal, Targets Assam CM Over 'NRC Notices'

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Election Commission (EC) on Monday (21 July) of plotting a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise in the state, similar to the one now taking place in Bihar. She pledged to reject such an action, reported Hindustan Times.

Speaking at the Trinamool Congress (TMC) Martyrs' Day rally, Mamata claimed that both the BJP and the EC were “conspiring against Bengal” with an intention to remove Bengalis from the voter list.

The EC had initiated the SIR in Bihar on 24 June ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections.

According to the poll panel, the procedure has covered 94.68 per cent of the state's electors and is set to end on 25 July. Opposition parties have expressed concerns that the drill may spread to other states.

Jibe at Assam CM

She also raised objections to a notice from Assam’s Foreigners Tribunal to a farmer from West Bengal’s Cooch Behar district, questioning, “Who has authorised BJP govt in Assam to send NRC notices to residents of Bengal?"

Call for Protests

Calling the BJP’s actions an attack on Bengalis and their language, Mamata urged TMC workers to hold protest rallies every weekend after 27 July. “Our resistance will reach Delhi if this continues,” she warned, asserting that the TMC would fight until the BJP is removed from power at the Centre.
