A major fire broke out on four wagons of a diesel-laden goods train near Tiruvallur railway station around 5.30 am on Friday (11 July ), causing panic in nearby areas and disrupting train services to and from Chennai.

According to a report by NDTV, the goods train, travelling from Manali to the Tirupati region, caught fire near Tiruvallur, resulting in towering flames and thick black smoke.

Authorities evacuated residents from the surrounding locality as a precautionary measure.

Fire and rescue teams arrived swiftly and are trying to bring the blaze under control.

Officials confirmed that no loss of life or damage to property occurred, though the operation was complicated due to the presence of highly inflammable diesel.

Seema Aggarwal, Chief of Fire Services, stated that teams were working to extinguish the flames and that additional reinforcements were dispatched due to the volatile nature of diesel.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, officials said.

The incident has severely disrupted railway operations.

Southern Railways announced the cancellation of eight trains departing from Chennai and the diversion of five others, with restoration efforts currently underway.
