Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw stated on Saturday (1 March) that the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train project is progressing well.

"The bullet train project is making excellent progress. Work on approximately 360 km has advanced significantly, reaching the viaduct level, and track slabs are being laid. The construction of stations is also progressing well," Vaishnaw told mediapersons, IANS reported.

The Railway Minister also highlighted the growth trajectory of Japan’s first Bullet Train between Tokyo and Osaka.

He noted that the six major stations along this route—Nagoya, Kyoto, Atami, Shinagawa, Shin-Yokohama, and Odawara—have evolved into significant industrial and residential hubs.

Vaishnaw stated that the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train corridor would bring similar growth benefits.

“In the morning, a person could have a breakfast of fafda-dhokla in Ahmedabad, travel to Mumbai for work during the day, and return home in the evening to spend time with their children,” he said.

"The project aims to create economic hubs along the route, boosting growth in cities like Mumbai, Thane, Vapi, Surat, Vadodara, Anand, and Ahmedabad, effectively interconnecting them as a single economic zone," he said.

Stretching 508 km with 12 stations spread across Maharashtra and Gujarat, the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train corridor is set to transform intercity travel.

The route is expected to promote urban growth, significantly cut travel time, and enhance productivity for commuters.

Estimated to cost Rs 1.08 lakh crore, the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail project leverages advanced Japanese railway technology and is slated for completion in the near future.

Once operational, the corridor is expected to catalyse economic growth in the cities it connects, with Mumbai and Ahmedabad standing to gain the most.
