Mumbai’s suburban rail network is set for a big upgrade, with plans to roll out fully air-conditioned trains in 12, 15 and eventually 18 coach formats.

The move, aimed at easing overcrowding and enhancing commuter comfort, will be rolled out in phases depending on feasibility, according to a Free Press Journal report.

At present, the majority of services are 12 coach trains, with only a limited number of 15 coach rakes in operation.

To meet future demand, the Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation Ltd (MRVC) has initiated a massive procurement drive under the Mumbai Urban Transport Projects (MUTP) Phase III and IIIA.

The tender, published on Saturday (6 September), is for the procurement and maintenance of 2,856 air-conditioned Vande Metro broad gauge rakes.

The scope includes not only the supply of these coaches but also their comprehensive maintenance for a period of 35 years

The bidding process opens on 8 December and will close on 22 December 2025.

The upgraded coaches will feature a range of modern amenities, including automatic door-closing systems, cushioned seating, mobile charging points, infotainment, higher-capacity HVAC, and vendors’ compartments at either end of the train.

Designed for speeds of up to 130 kmph, the trains will also offer faster acceleration and deceleration to compensate for boarding delays, thereby improving punctuality and overall efficiency.

The first prototype rake is expected to be delivered within two years of awarding the contract.
