Mumbai Metro: Line 2B And Line 3 Move Closer To Full Operations With Safety Inspections Underway

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has begun the process of obtaining statutory safety approvals for Phase I of Metro Line 2B — the 5.39 km Mandale–Chembur stretch.

Dr Sanjay Mukherjee, IAS, Metropolitan Commissioner of MMRDA and Chairman of Maha Mumbai Metro, led a review of the route alongside senior officials, issuing directives to ensure timely completion.

Earlier this week, a team from the Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety (CMRS) carried out critical inspections. Once CMRS certification is granted, the corridor will be ready to open for passenger services.

Phase I of Line 2B includes five stations — Mandale Metro, Mankhurd Metro, BSNL, Shri Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Chowk, and Diamond Garden.

When fully operational from Mandale to DN Nagar, the line is expected to cut travel time by 50–75 per cent, ease congestion, lower emissions, and create seamless interchange with four other metro lines, the Monorail, and both Central and Western Railways.

On 12 September, CMRS began inspecting the last 10.99 km stretch between Worli and Cuffe Parade. Officials expect the inspection report to be ready by next week, followed by a final verification.

Currently, metro services on Line 3 operate over a 22.46 km section between Aarey and Acharya Atre Chowk. Once the southern extension opens, it will add 11 new stations and link Colaba, Worli, Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) and Aarey.

The project is expected to ease the burden on the Mumbai Suburban Railway and cut road traffic in key business districts.
