Mumbai Metro Line 2B Phase I Set To Transform Eastern Suburbs With Mandale–Chembur Corridor

Mumbai’s eastern suburbs are set to get metro connectivity for the first time as Phase I of Metro Line 2B, covering the Mandale-Diamond Garden stretch, nears inauguration, The Times of India reported.

The 5.5-km elevated section, featuring five stations - Mandale, Mankhurd, BSNL, Shivaji Chowk, and Diamond Garden - will provide faster and more reliable travel for residents of Chembur and surrounding areas.

The Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety (CMRS) has granted final approval for the corridor after completing safety inspections.

With this clearance, the route is ready for commercial operations, and the inauguration is expected around 30 or 31 October.

Trial runs began on 16 April, following electrification on 8 April.

Daily tests have ensured full readiness of signalling, safety, and train systems.

Mankhurd station will serve as a major multimodal interchange, linking Metro Line 2B with the Harbour Line of Mumbai’s suburban railway network, allowing seamless connectivity between different transport modes.

Metro Line 2B will ultimately span 23.6 km from DN Nagar to Mandale, connecting western, central, and eastern Mumbai through key areas such as Bandra, Kurla, and Chembur. The fully elevated corridor includes 20 stations and a 31-acre carshed at Mandale for maintenance.

When fully operational, the line is expected to serve over 10 lakh passengers daily, reducing road congestion and improving urban mobility.

By integrating with other metro lines, expressways, and suburban rail networks, Line 2B will play a pivotal role in enhancing east-west connectivity and supporting Mumbai’s long-term urban development.
