Mumbai Metro Line 4: MMRDA Installs Eight U-Girders In A Single Night At Kapurbawdi Station

In a significant engineering feat, eight massive U-girders were successfully installed overnight at Kapurbawdi station, a key interchange on the upcoming Mumbai Metro Line 4, which will run from Wadala to Gaimukh.

The operation, carried out by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) during the intervening night of Monday and Tuesday, involved positioning girders weighing nearly 98 metric tonnes each—amounting to approximately 783 metric tonnes in total.

According to a treport by The Indian Express, the installation spanned two sections supporting both the up and down corridors and was executed with the coordinated efforts of over 90 personnel, including riggers, labourers, traffic officials, and crane operators, aided by high-capacity cranes and multi-axle trailers.

Kapurbawdi station, located on this crucial thoroughfare, will serve as a multi-level interchange between Metro Lines 4 and 5 (Thane–Bhiwandi–Kalyan).

Once operational, the 35.2-km elevated corridor will significantly ease east-west suburban travel, cutting journey times by up to 75 per cent and offering a greener, more efficient alternative to road traffic.
