Mumbai's Metro Line 9 has initiated its trial runs on the 11.4 km elevated corridor connecting Kashigaon to Dahisar East, marking a significant development for the Mira-Bhayandar region, Times of India reported.

This extension of Metro Line 7 aims to alleviate traffic congestion on the Western Express Highway and reduce crowding on Western Railway’s suburban trains. Once operational, it will serve densely populated areas like Kashigaon and Mira Road, functioning as a feeder to Metro Line 7.

The corridor will also provide access to the domestic airport via Line 7A and facilitate smoother travel to South Mumbai through Line 3A.

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has completed 96 per cent of civil work and 75 per cent of system integration. Dynamic testing, including load evaluations, signalling, traction, and emergency drills, is currently underway.

Once fully operational, Metro Line 9 will integrate with Metro Lines 2A, 7/7A, 10, and 13, enhancing connectivity across Mumbai and extending direct access to Thane, Palghar, and Raigad districts.

This development is part of the Maharashtra government's broader plan to expand the metro network, with 50 km of new routes expected in 2025, 62 km in 2026, and 60 km in 2027.

Metro Line 9 is expected to cut travel times by 50–75 per cent compared to current road journeys, depending on traffic conditions.

The new line will connect Mira-Bhayandar directly to Mumbai’s western and eastern suburbs, including vital hubs like Andheri, Ghatkopar, and the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport through interchanges with other metro lines.
