Mumbai-Pune Expressway Set For 10-Lane Upgrade In Rs 14,000 Crore Revamp To Ease Traffic Congestion

The Mumbai-Pune Expressway, India’s first access-controlled expressway, is poised to undergo a significant transformation.
The six-lane highway is set to be widened into a 10-lane expressway, in a bid to reduce traffic congestion, enhance safety, and improve commute times for thousands of daily travellers, reported News18.
The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) is leading the Rs 14,000 crore expansion plan, which has been drafted and is now headed to the state cabinet for final approval.
Once cleared, construction will commence in phases.
Spanning 94.5 km, the Mumbai-Pune Expressway serves as a vital economic artery between two of Maharashtra’s largest urban centres.
However, with traffic volumes surging especially during weekends and holidays commuters have increasingly faced delays and bottlenecks.
“Current road capacity is insufficient to handle the rising traffic volume. Detailed surveys have confirmed the need for additional lanes,” a source was quoted as saying by News18.
The project also promises enhanced safety features, improved emergency response systems, and smarter road infrastructure designed to handle higher volumes with fewer accidents.
A second survey is underway to identify land acquisition needs and iron out technical specifications.
The project will reportedly not only smoothen travel but also stimulate trade, tourism, and regional investment.
However, commuters have raised one concern that the toll charges should not rise as a result of the upgrade.
Project milestones and timelines will be announced following cabinet clearance.
