Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud of India has written to the Chief Justices of High Courts regarding an incident where a judge demanded an explanation for inconveniences faced during a train journey.

Justice Chandrachud expressed concern about the incident, stating that it has caused disquiet within and outside the judiciary. He emphasized the importance of self-reflection and counseling within the judiciary.

Justice Chandrachud highlighted that a High Court does not possess disciplinary jurisdiction over railway personnel in his note.

In his message, Justice Chandrachud also emphasized that judges should not misuse the protocol facilities available to them to assert privilege or demonstrate power and authority. He emphasized the importance of wise exercise of judicial authority, both inside and outside the courtroom, to maintain the credibility, legitimacy, and public confidence in the judiciary.
