Bengaluru and Mumbai, two of India’s most powerful economic centres, will soon be connected by a new superfast train, a move that addresses a demand pending for more than three decades.
The approval, granted by the Union Ministry of Railways, was announced by BJP MP Tejasvi Surya on Saturday (27 September) on X.
Until now, rail travellers between the two cities have largely depended on the Udyan Express, which takes over 24 hours to cover the distance.
The absence of faster connectivity by train has long been a problem for commuters, especially when compared with the rapid growth of both metros.
Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, in the video statement said, "Very soon, we will start a superfast train between Bengaluru and Mumbai. Both cities are major economic hubs and capacity expansion at their stations has now made this possible."
The Bengaluru MP has been pursuing the matter for four years, raising it repeatedly in Parliament, at Public Accounts Committee meetings, and in discussions with senior Railway officials.
His office noted that the service will not only ease congestion in existing travel options but also provide a reliable alternative to flights and buses.
Surya expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Railway Minister Vaishnaw for their support, and also acknowledged Minister of State for Railways V Somanna’s role in moving the project forward.
