NHAI To Deploy High-Tech Network Survey Vehicles Across 23 States To Assess And Improve Highway Conditions

To enhance the quality and safety of India’s highways, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is set to deploy Network Survey Vehicles (NSVs) across 23 states, covering nearly 20,933 km of National Highway stretches.
The initiative aims to collect, process, and analyse detailed data on road inventory and pavement conditions, helping the agency detect and address issues such as surface cracks, potholes, and patches more effectively.
According to NHAI, the data gathered from the NSV surveys will be integrated into its AI-based Data Lake platform, where a dedicated team of experts will transform the information into actionable insights.
These insights will guide timely maintenance and management decisions, ensuring improved durability and driving comfort on highways.
The collected data will also be archived for future use within the Road Asset Management System, in accordance with Government of India standards.
These vehicles will use high-resolution 360-degree cameras, Differential GPS (DGPS), Inertial Measurement Units (IMU), and Distance Measuring Indicators (DMI) to precisely assess and record pavement conditions.
NHAI stated that surveys will be conducted before project commencement and subsequently every six months to maintain updated records of highway health. Bids have already been invited from qualified companies to implement the initiative.
The advanced NSV system represents a modern approach to infrastructure management, combining technology-driven analysis with proactive maintenance planning.
