In a landmark initiative, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his UK counterpart Keir Starmer have unveiled plans for nine prominent British universities to establish campuses in India, India Today reported.
The University of Southampton’s Gurugram campus is already operational, with its first batch of students having begun classes.
The move represents a milestone in India-UK educational cooperation, in line with India’s National Education Policy 2020.
It seeks to offer global-quality education to Indian students domestically and strengthen research, innovation, and industry-academia partnerships for national skill growth.
Five leading British universities have committed to setting up campuses across major Indian cities.
Among them, the University of Bristol has secured UGC approval for its Enterprise Campus in Mumbai, which is expected to open its doors to students by mid-2026.

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer is on his first official visit to India from 8-9 October.
During the two-day visit, PM Modi and Starmer reviewed the progress of the India-UK Comprehensive Strategic Partnership under the Vision 2035 roadmap.
The decade-long roadmap seeks to deepen cooperation in diverse sectors including education, trade, defence, climate, and innovation.
