Indian Railways has committed Rs 10,440 crore for the development of railway infrastructure in the Northeast, as part of the Rs 2.65 lakh crore provision under the Union Budget for 2025-26.

This funding is aimed at improving connectivity and safety in the region, marking a significant increase from previous years.

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw emphasised that this allocation is more than five times the average annual funding of Rs 2,122 crore during the 2009-2014 period, announced in a press conference on Monday (3 January).

He outlined that the enhanced budget would be directed towards various key infrastructure projects, including the construction of new railway lines, track renewals, road safety improvements, and better passenger amenities.

Since 2014, 1,824 km of new railway tracks have been laid in the Northeast, surpassing the total rail network of Sri Lanka. Additionally, 478 new flyovers and underpasses have been built to improve connectivity across the region.

Chetan Kumar Shrivastava and Arun Kumar Choudhary, general managers of Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR), shared updates on ongoing projects, including the revamping of 92 railway stations under the Amrit Bharat Stations Scheme.

This initiative aims to provide modern facilities and improved services to passengers.

The electrification of all NFR railway tracks is expected to be completed by December 2025, while the Bhairabi-Sairang railway project in Mizoram is set to be finished by July 2025.

The Railway Ministry also announced plans to introduce 200 new Vande Bharat trains, 100 Amrit Bharat trains, and 50 Namo Bharat rapid rail services, alongside the construction of 1,000 new flyovers and underpasses across the country to enhance safety and efficiency.
