Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday (2 February) assured Delhi residents that slums would not be demolished if BJP comes to power in the national capital.

PM Modi's remarks came in response to claims by Aam Aadmi Party national convener Arvind Kejriwal, who alleged that the BJP would target slum areas if elected.

“Not a single slum will be demolished in Delhi. We don’t make announcements just for show. We make provisions in the budget to back our promises,” PM Modi said while addressing a rally in Delhi's R K Puram.

He criticised the Aam Aadmi Party for spreading rumours to mislead the public.

The campaigning for Delhi polls is intensifying, with the election for 70 assembly seats in the national capital scheduled for 5 February, and vote counting set for 8 February.

PM Modi also assured that all public welfare schemes would continue under BJP rule, stating, “We are committed to public interest. We won’t shut down beneficial schemes after coming to power".

“I understand their feelings because I am also an MP from Purvanchal. During Covid, some parties treated them unfairly, forcing them out of Delhi. But the BJP government will always support the people of Purvanchal and Bihar,” he added, taking a dig at the AAP’s handling of migrant workers during the pandemic.

He also emphasised the NDA’s efforts for Bihar, mentioning the creation of a Makhana Board to support local farmers, especially Dalit families involved in makhana cultivation.

“When I work for the welfare of Dalit families, these people mock us,” he said.

PM Modi criticised both the AAP and Congress for failing Delhi's youth through alleged sports development efforts.

Citing the Commonwealth Games, he remarked, “The CWG scam has left an indelible stain that the Congress cannot erase. Similarly, the AAP has jeopardized the future of Delhi's youth with their supposed sports university plans.”
