Odisha Government Plans New Four-Lane Expressway From Rasulgarh To Raghunathpur To Ease Bhubaneswar’s Traffic Congestion

To improve traffic flow in Bhubaneswar, the Odisha government is planning a new four-lane expressway connecting Rasulgarh to Raghunathpur in the northern corridor of the capital region.
The proposed route is envisioned as an alternative to the heavily congested Jayadev Vihar–Nandankanan road and aims to provide a high-speed corridor linking NH-16 with residential and commercial hubs in the northern sectors, The New Indian Express reported.
Officials indicated that the expressway will help decongest the Jayadev Vihar–Patia–Nandankanan stretch and allow vehicles travelling between the southern and northern parts of the city to bypass core urban areas entirely.
While no final alignment has been decided, the road is expected to run parallel to the Chandaka–Patia belt, connecting key institutional areas, IT hubs, and residential nodes.
Provisions for service roads, pedestrian pathways, and future expansion are likely to be included, reflecting the government’s emphasis on integrated urban mobility.
The study will include alignment planning, 30 year traffic forecasts, land acquisition requirements, environmental impact assessment, cost estimates, and planning for toll plazas, parking areas, bus bays, and drainage systems.
“The road’s viability will be studied first. Once the feasibility survey is conducted and a DPR is prepared, it will be placed before the government for approval. The expressway is expected to reduce travel time by at least 30 to 40 per cent once operational and divert a considerable volume of traffic,” a senior official from the Works Department was quoted as saying.
